The DOT Semi-Truck Medical Driver is responsible for the safe, secure, timely, and professional transportation of medical supplies, specimens, medications, equipment, documents, and other healthcare-related materials between designated facilities and locations.

The DOT Semi-Truck Medical Driver operates company commercial motor vehicles, including tractor-trailer equipment, in compliance with all applicable Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), company, client, and safety requirements.

The driver is responsible for properly securing and protecting all materials in their possession throughout transportation and for maintaining accurate delivery and vehicle records. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, professionalism, reliability, and commitment to safety and confidentiality.

Schedule Needed: Monday through Friday, 3:30 PM to 1:00 AM (End time may vary)

Responsibilities

Safely operate company tractor-trailer and other assigned commercial vehicles in accordance with DOT, FMCSA, state, and company requirements.
Transport medical supplies, specimens, medications, medical equipment, documents, and other healthcare-related materials between hospitals, laboratories, clinics, pharmacies, distribution centers, and other designated locations.
Ensure specimens and other temperature-sensitive, fragile, or time-sensitive materials are handled and transported appropriately to maintain their integrity.
Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and promptly report safety concerns, defects, or maintenance issues.
Operate a manual pallet jack to safely move, load, unload, position, and secure freight using appropriate equipment and procedures.
Verify shipment contents, quantities, labels, delivery locations, and required documentation before and during transportation.
Maintain the security and integrity of all medical-related materials while in the driver's possession.
Follow all applicable procedures regarding the handling and transportation of medical specimens, medications, equipment, and confidential documents.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable HIPAA and client privacy requirements when handling protected health information.
Maintain appropriate chain-of-custody and delivery documentation when required.
Obtain and accurately document signatures, delivery confirmations, pickup information, and other required records.
Complete deliveries and pickups according to established schedules and customer requirements.
Communicate professionally and courteously with hospitals, healthcare facilities, laboratories, clients, vendors, and company personnel.
Communicate with dispatch using company-approved mobile devices and communication systems.
Immediately report delays, accidents, damaged freight, missing items, temperature concerns, security issues, or other delivery exceptions to the appropriate company personnel.
Maintain cleanliness and general condition of the assigned vehicle and trailer.
Ensure the vehicle is properly fueled, inspected, and maintained according to company procedures.
Operate a liftgate, and other freight-handling equipment as required.
Follow all company safety, security, infection-control, and transportation procedures applicable to the position.
Maintain required DOT records, logs, inspections, and documentation.
Comply with hours-of-service and other applicable commercial-driver requirements.
Perform all duties in accordance with applicable safety, security, confidentiality, and regulatory standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), appropriate for the vehicle being operated.
Must meet all applicable DOT and FMCSA requirements for the position.
Minimum age of 21 years or as otherwise required by applicable law and company policy.
Minimum of 3 years of driving experience, with commercial driving experience preferred.
Acceptable motor vehicle driving record in accordance with company and client requirements.
Ability to successfully complete the company's driver qualification process.
Ability to successfully pass required DOT pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, physical examination, background check, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review.
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
Previous tractor-trailer, freight, medical courier, healthcare logistics, or other commercial transportation experience preferred.
Ability to safely operate a manual pallet jack.
Ability to read, write, and understand written instructions and delivery documentation.
Basic math skills and ability to accurately verify quantities and shipment information.
Ability to use a smartphone, tablet, electronic logging system, GPS/navigation system, and other company technology.
Knowledge of assigned service areas and ability to effectively use GPS/navigation tools.
Strong communication, customer service, organizational, and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions within established company procedures.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling medical information and healthcare-related materials.

DOT and Regulatory Compliance

The employee must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local transportation requirements, including company policies governing commercial motor vehicle operation.
Requirements may include, as applicable:
- Valid CDL and appropriate endorsements.
- DOT medical certification.
- DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Pre-trip, post-trip, and other required vehicle inspections.
- Hours-of-service requirements.
- Electronic logging device (ELD) requirements.
- Vehicle and cargo securement requirements.
- Accident and incident reporting procedures.
- Driver qualification and recordkeeping requirements.
- Compliance with applicable company and client-specific transportation procedures.

Medical and Healthcare-Related Handling Requirements
Because this position transports healthcare-related materials, the driver must:

Protect the confidentiality and security of medical information and documents.
Follow company and client procedures for the transportation of specimens, medications, medical equipment, and other regulated or sensitive materials.
Maintain required chain-of-custody documentation.
Properly secure shipments throughout transportation.
Follow any applicable temperature-control, packaging, labeling, or handling requirements.
Immediately report compromised, damaged, lost, delayed, or improperly secured shipments.
Follow all applicable infection-control, exposure-control, and safety procedures provided by the company or client.

Physical Requirements
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.

Ability to sit and remain alert for extended periods, including long-distance driving.
Ability to enter and exit the truck cab repeatedly, using steps and handrails safely.
Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach as needed.
Ability to climb steps, ladders, or trailer access points when performing inspections or securing cargo.
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment, materials, or cargo as required by the position.
Ability to perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including visually and physically checking tires, brakes, lights, hoses, coupling devices, and other equipment.
Ability to grip and manipulate steering wheels, controls, tools, hoses, and other equipment.
Sufficient upper- and lower-body strength, coordination, and range of motion to safely operate the vehicle and its controls.
Ability to turn the head and torso and maintain adequate field of vision for safe driving and vehicle inspections.
Ability to hear warning signals, horns, alarms, and other sounds necessary for safe vehicle operation.
Ability to see adequately for safe driving, including recognizing traffic signals, road hazards, pedestrians, vehicles, and other objects.
Ability to tolerate varying weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and outdoor work.
Ability to respond appropriately to unexpected driving or roadside situations and safely exit the vehicle when necessary.
